Recipe for Marital Success

January 30, 1947
Hollywood
Get miffy at tennis pro hubby when a lady tennis player calls to suggest they team up in a tournament match, cry as he splits for the L.A. Tennis Club, drink a shot of iodine, follow it up with an antidote of flour and eggs, then telephone sweetums to tell 'im what you've done. He'll race home and speed your upsy tummy to Hollywood Receiving Hospital for emergency treatment. Game, set and match to wifeypoo.

This is the scenario played out in the third week of marriage by tennis star Tom Falkenburg and his 21-year-old model bride, Bernice Allred Falkenberg, in their home at 523 N. Cahuenga. BTW, fellas, it's a big red flag when your sweetie doesn't just try to poison herself, but administers her own antidote!

Attacker
Masked Man Assaults
Girl at Gun Point

A young masked gunman early today attacked an attractive 18-year-old girl in the Hawthorne district after forcing her to enter his automobile on 161st Street near Hawthorne Boulevard.

“Keep quiet and get in the car or suffer the consequences,” the man told [name deleted], 18, of [address deleted] W. 161st St as he brandished the gun in her face.

After driving around about 20 minutes, the girl said, her assailant climbed into the back seat with her and forced her to submit to his advances at the point of a gun.

Then he dumped her from the car at a point near the Hawthorne police station. She notified police and deputy sheriffs in Hawthorne and later was treated at the Park Emergency Hospital.

Miss [name deleted] said the man wore a handkerchief over his face from the eyes down.

It is difficult to believe that there was a time when newspapers published rape victims’ names and addresses, but the Herald-Express had no misgivings about it. Aggie Underwood, Herald reporter and eventually the city editor of the Herald-Examiner, said she once had to go out eight weeks in a row and interview rape victims. Since this woman may still be alive, I’ve deleted her name and address.
